What Can Be Reused Before It Goes in the Bin?

When we think about recycling, we often think about putting something in the correct recycling bin. That is important, but there is another question worth asking first:

Can this be reused? Reuse can take many forms:

  • A glass jar can become a container.
  • An old tin can become storage or a planter.
  • A wooden box can become a display piece.
  • Old fabric can become something useful.
  • Broken toys can provide interesting parts for another project.
  • Old buttons, keys, screws and washers can become materials for artwork.

Even something that is no longer useful for its original purpose may still have plenty of life left in it.

I collect many of these sorts of things for my upcycling projects. I like the unusual things most because they often become the details that give a creation its personality.

The important thing is that reuse doesn’t have to mean turning everything into art.

  • Sometimes it is simply using something again.
  • Sometimes it means repairing it.
  • Sometimes it means giving it to someone who can use it.
  • And sometimes it means taking it apart and saving the useful bits.

You can purchase my recyled creations in my Made It Shop

Before deciding something is rubbish, it can be worth asking:

Is there another use for this?

It is a small question, but sometimes it leads to a surprisingly good answer.

How I Started My Viking Wire Knitting Journey and How I Developed My Own Style of This Ancient Craft I’ve always been drawn to the stories held  within ancient design — the craftsmanship of cultures where jewellery wasn’t just decorative, but deeply grounded in identity, ritual, and  connnection. It’s the rawness, the imperfection, the quiet  beauty of something made by hand that continues to inspire me to create the jewellery designs that I make. Several years ago, I discovered a simple wire knitting tool kit and began teaching myself the ancient art of Viking wire knitting.What started as curiosity quickly became something more —a rhythm, a ritual. The slow repetitive motion of weaving wire by hand, looping the wire carefully around a wooden dowel,…
